CIRCLE and The Elephant
Opera-shortfilms at Cinemateket

In collaboration with Cinemateket, we present two opera short films by Lasse Schwanenflügel Piasecki. Both films are included with your ticket.
The Elephant (2025) and the world premiere of CIRCLE (2026). Two works exploring community, manipulation, longing, and the stories that bring us together.
CIRCLE is a romantic opera-dance film about a community whose harmony is sustained only by silencing other voices.
Inspired by The Pied Piper of Hamelin, The Elephant reflects on mass persuasion and society’s fascination with strong and charismatic leaders.
Extra: Meet director Lasse Schwanenflügel Piasecki and Copenhagen Opera Festival’s Artistic Director Amy Lane. Following the first screening, they will join a conversation about the films, their themes, and the possibilities of opera on screen. The conversation will be held in English.

CIRCLE

The elephant
The opera draws inspiration from the tale of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, exploring themes of mass seduction and society’s fascination with charismatic leaders. Set in a child’s bedroom at bedtime, the story unfolds as a dramatic conflict between siblings Constantia and John. Constantia voices her mistrust of adult authorities, accusing them of failing to ensure a safe and sustainable future for the next generation. In contrast, John adopts a pragmatic and conservative perspective, arguing that children have never had it better. For Constantia, the enigmatic Pied Piper, Hans Mushalle, represents a liberator from adult-driven wars and environmental crises. John, however, cautions against such simplistic solutions and revolutionary ideas. The tension between the siblings escalates as Hans Mushalle approaches, his beguiling song drawing the city’s children from their beds.
The composer employs what he calls “dialectical style pluralism,” using the manipulative capabilities of music to convey the opera's theme of mass seduction. The title, The Elephant, refers to the proverbial “elephant in the room.”
