The Copenhagen Opera Festival is a visionary, unifying and vibrant festival that every summer, enchants the city of Copenhagen with the most sumptuous menu of opera, concerts and music drama.

We are in constant dialogue with new, invigorating voices and we celebrate the eternal classics that can transcend time and place. We invest in story-telling that reflects our society here and now. And by imagining that the whole city of Copenhagen is our opera house, unique and unexpected spaces can suddenly play host to performances, creating the most magnificent musical memories as we go.

In short: the heart of the festival beats year round to bring us all together in the wild and wondrous world that is Opera.

Since 2009, Copenhagen Opera Festival has taken great pleasure in bringing the greatest artists to the capital, filling concert halls, theatres, streets and canals alike, with world-class music making. With an international outlook, combined with an eye for local and national talent, year after year we have created a diverse and sparkling programme of performances, concerts and events that welcome the aficionado, the culturally curious and families with children alike.

In 2021, we launched the Festival Stage, located at Den Røde Plads, Nørrebro, presenting opera in the highest league on street level, completely free of charge to the public. This open air stage attracts up to 10,000 visitors each year, presenting everything from community singing with the Audience Opera Choir, to Vocal Masterclass Concerts to full symphony orchestras, fully staged performances and the traditional Opening Concert.

At Copenhagen Opera Festival, you can experience reimagined Classics, side by side with newly written works and our productions range from ambitious international collaborations to small, experimental projects that can push and expand the boundaries of what opera is, and might be. In recent years, the Festival commissioned award winning and award nominated productions such as Nordkraft and Lisbon Floor as well as presenting bold and striking stagings of Puccini’s Il Trittico. Our family production of Wagner’s Ring Cycle for children is 60 minutes long and it will travel all around Denmark in the coming seasons. And behind the scenes, major works and new national and international collaborations are already taking shape for our future festivals.

Every year, we welcome an Opera Star to the city as Guest Artist of the Year, celebrate a new Danish voice with the Opera Talent of the Year Award and we facilitate meetings for independent creatives on the Danish and international circuit.

Through our workshops, insights and curious conversation series, we invite the audience behind the scenes and into the engine room of Opera – seeking to crack codes and unravel mysteries! We seek to investigate what happens if you present Opera in a prison, on tour in an open-sided bus or in new digital worlds.
